"I like the way Fred's played," Bobby Petrino said. "He's been able to catch the deep ball, and he does a nice job with his footwork at the line of scrimmage and he's been able to get open."Duh! Of course he can catch the deep ball. We're talking about a guy that used to own the domain name deepball82.com.
But anyway, is all this attention to Gibson a sign that he actually has a shot at making the team, or is it the local media trying to get Georgia fans interested in the Falcons? My guess is it's a little bit of both.
With Brian Finneran likely out for the season, I think Fred may have a shot, albeit a long shot at that. If Finneran was healthy, I don't think he'd have a chance at all. Let's look at the Falcons' depth at wide receiver...
There are seven receivers on the depth chart excluding Finneran: Michael Jenkins, Joe Horn, Roddy White, Adam Jennings, Laurent Robinson, Fred Gibson, and Jamin Elliot. I think Jenkins, Horn, and Robinson are locks to make the team. Robinson will stay because they used a draft pick on him this season. I purposefully left White out of that category. If he doesn't look good in the pre season, I could see Petrino making an example out of him.
So let's say the Falcons keep five receivers as the AJC article suggests. Fred is competing with Roddy White, Adam Jennings, and Jamin Elliot for one of the other two receiver spots. Like I said, it's a long shot, but at least it's a shot.
