Vick Indicted...Paging D.J. Shockley?

The whole world knows Michael Vick was indicted today due to his alleged involvement in dogfighting. Since this is a blog on Georgia, let's talk about how it will affect D.J. Shockley. Vick is certainly innocent until proven guilty; however, you have to think the chances of him being suspended sky rocketed today. On top of that, a suspension by the NFL is probably the least of his worries right now.

So, if Vick does get suspended by the NFL (or worse), what does that mean for D.J.? Shockley is currently 3rd string on the depth chart behind Vick and Joey Harrington. One would think if Vick is suspended Harrington goes to number one, making Shockley one play away from being the starter. My guess is that probably won't happen. I think the Falcons will bring in another veteran should Vick be suspended.

I know that isn't what us Georgia fans want to hear, but when guys like Daunte Culpepper are on the market the Falcons have to take a look.

  2. Forget Culpepper and Harrington. Give the kid a shot! The other two both had their chances and they are both washed up.

  3. actually the falcons signed chris redman so DJ might be fighting for a roster spot although i think they would let redman go instead of making him 3rd string

  4. If you're really looking for optimism, I think there is a video on Myspace or somewhere of the 2-Minute Drill Shockley ran against the Patriots in last year's preseason where he brings them into field goal range for the game winner.

And then, to return to Planet Earth you could do like I do... watch the 1995 UGA/UT game that I recorded off Classic this afternoon. Where we lost to Peyton - again. Sigh.

  5. Anon 11:55 - Check the depth chart. Redman is behind Shockley. I'm confident the Falcons will keep Shockley over Redman. Redman has been out of the league for the past two seasons.

Duane - You won't find that 2 minute drill video anywhere these days. I actually made it. The NFL had it taken down from YouTube. I think it's pretty funny that of all the videos on YouTube with NFL footage, they had that one taken down.

  6. Really? Do they have nothing better to do?

I actually meant to pass this tidbit along from the weekend... I was waiting to order a beer at halftime of the Georgia Shock game on Saturday and I started talking to the guy ahead of me. Do you remember a Jeff Nixon (I think that's right), a former UGA LB from ~89/90? Talked to him for a bit in line - awesome, super nice guy. He was saying Hampton was the nicest guy and how Goff would bench Terrell Davis because he thought he was dogging it by saying he had headaches in practice.

Just wondered if you remembered the name. Super cool guy.

  8. Duane - I don't recall that name. But then again I was only 9 or 10 at the time...I will say I was a huge fan of Rodney Hampton though. He was the first person I ever referred to as my favorite player.

  10. Duane - You rock! I actually accidentally deleted that video from my hard drive a while back. So I haven't seen that in a while. I had no idea it was anywhere anymore.
