How far away are we from an "All-DUI" wing at Butts-Mehre? This is the 3rd alcohol-related arrest this offseason. Super. This is what Richt needs to be worrying about while painting bombs in the Middle East.
I think it's important to realize that the kids getting in trouble aren't just poor student-athletes. Boling is a white, upper middle-class kid from the suburbs. A lot of conjecture around problems in college athletics revolves around race and socio-economic class. The public love to point it out when a poor kid ruins his "opportunity" but people are slow to jump on a white kid who has all the advantages in the world. Isn't this situation worse? Boling is a product of the Alpharetta sense of entitlement and privilege and the "turn a blind eye" style of parenting that is so prevalent in the suburbs. I'm sure his lawyer will get him out of any real trouble so let's hope Boling learned something from the incident. I hope there isn't a "Don't you know who I am?" element that comes out later...
Ah yes. He went to Chattahoochee. That explains everything. Had he gone to Milton, this never would have happened :-)
ReplyDeleteI gotta say, I'm a little surprised by the scathing write-up.
ReplyDeleteDo you know Clint and his family personally? Do you know the details surrounding this arrest?
I don't and that's exactly why I'm choosing to reserve judgment and certainly stereotypes until facts are released.
Is it necessary to paint Clint and his family with such a broad brush?
I've read where Clint is denying he was drunk & asked for a blood test - which is EXACTLY within his rights and often advised if you wish to contest the charges in court.
Look, I'm not saying you're wrong. What I am saying however, is it might be best to reserve judgment & conviction until all of the facts are known. Or at the very least until he has his day in court. There's no reason to throw him completely under the bus just yet.
Call me crazy, but I still believe in the old adage "Innocent until PROVEN guilty."
You have valid points Ally and I went back and forth on how to write the article. I did teach at CHS when Clint went there and knew his friends and knew what their parents let them do on he weekends. Let's just say that drinking was a large part of it and I heard too many stories of ids driving. I didn't like writing what I wrote nor does it give me any satisfaction as an educator or football fan. I think I would rather indict the culture rather than the individual if that makes sense.
ReplyDeleteWe value your readership and I hope this didn't put you off too much. Thanks for your comments as always!

ReplyDeleteFair enough. Thank you so much for answering that question. Like I said, I don't know him, but obviously you do so I'll follow your wisdom on this one.

Are you kidding? No way!! I love your blog and love that everyone can discuss or debate UGA related topics here. Besides I crave your game highlights too much to ever leave ;-)
Thanks so much as always for setting me straight, stating the facts, and responding back!
Oh, and God bless you for being a teacher. I know I couldn't do it! Hope you had a great holiday.
Go Dawgs!
