Dawgs Beat Zags
Georgia beat Gonzaga 96-83 yesterday at Gwinnett Arena. Yours truly was in attendance with my dad, the Deaner, and one of the Deaner's buddies. We were all in shock by what unfolded before our eyes. I'm still a little in shock actually. I can't recall the last time I've seen a team shoot as well as Gonzaga does. They are deadly from beyond the arc. If any of their players have an uncontested shot, its nearly automatic. Fortunately the Dawgs picked up the defense in the second half. Once our guys started getting hands in the faces of the Zags' shooters, their shots weren't falling as often.
Four players for Georgia reached double digits in scoring as Levi Stukes lead the way with 25 points, a career high. Sundiata Gaines added 21, Mercer 19, and Takais Brown had 11. The most talked about Dawgs from the game were definitely Stukes, Gaines, and Mercer. But don't discount Brown's impact. As the game wore down and Georgia was running clock, Takais had several key rebounds and points in the paint. Still the highlight of the game was Mercer's dunk.
This Georgia team really is impressive. I hope people start coming out to see them. I don't think we turned the mutha out on Saturday, but it was a decent crowd. Personally, I love having the game in Gwinnett. Its much easier for me to get over there than Athens. However, the main drawback to having a game there is that you lose the students. If there was the normal amount of students in attendance yesterday, the place would have been packed.
One more thing. Make sure to check out Mark Schlabach's writeup from the game on ESPN.com. There is a nice video clip on the page that includes highlights from the game as well as an interview with Coach Felton conducted by Rick Majerus who called the game on ESPN2.

Good article. I agree that Brown - and also Jackson who is a lot better than I anticipated - are key, not so much because of how many points they score, or even rebounds/blocks, but because they require the other team to put somebody on them. It frees up the other guys and just makes the whole team better. Even Bliss and Newman are looking good.
