The Uniforms

People are making way too big of a deal about the dang helmets and pants. Let me start by saying this, you open the door for this criticism when you change the uni's. If you change them, you better win. Because if you lose, there will be idiots that think the uniforms lost the game.

While this opens the door for the criticism, the resulting criticism is generally lame. The most annoying thing I keep hearing is that the staff should have spent more time game planning and less time wardrobe planning. I suppose these people think the coaches spent the bye week in endless meetings debating whether or not to wear black helmets and pants. Give me a break! Richt said they had the helmets last year. My guess is it was Richt's decision and not much discussion was held on the matter.

The other annoying thing I hear is that Georgia is above this...Alabama, USC, and so on don't do things like this. Well, I've got some news for you if you think that way. We aren't above anything right now.

What you have to remember is these are kids playing in those uniforms. They think it's cool. Whether it gives them extra motivation or not, it's something that is fun to do for them. I thought it was cool myself.

The only complaint I have is along the lines of part of what PWD said. I'll quote him.
I think special uniforms should be worn by special teams. You beat the Gators, you can have a blackout against Auburn. You get a Sugar Bowl birth, you can have a blackout against Hawaii. You come into the Bama game undefeated with ESPN Gameday in attendance, then sure...a blackout is fine.

But 4-3 teams shouldn't get special treatment. They should just work harder. And by team, I mean coaches and players.
Now that I can agree with. The alternate uniforms should be a reward.

  1. I couldn't agree more. I certainly agree with the assessment the coaching staff wasn't spending all their time concentrating on the players' attire, but Richt had to know he was leaving himself open to criticism by going with the uniform change.

For the UGA/UF game, should the players need any extra motivation than they already have? Is playing the #1 team in the nation in your rivalry game not enough?

Someone asked me the other day... how good would say, Georgia Tech's defense be if they had Georgia's talent? And it made me think. Would Arkansas or Mississippi State have done better if they had the likes of Owens, Curran, Boykin, Jones, etc? Is the coaching really as bad as we're making it out? Would Richt really axe both his coordinators at season's end?

My biggest gripe with the game was easily the penalties. And really, that's a reflection on the coaches. There's no excuse for players to be ripping helmets, grabbing facemasks and so on and so on. If/when this does happen, more needs to be done than Richt shrugging his shoulders for CBS' camera crew and an empty promise in his post-game interview saying we're going to address the penalties.

The question now is whether you burn Murray or Mettenberger's redshirts. I wouldn't - no way, no how. Let Cox finish the season, increase Gray's reps save the season by knocking off Tech in Atlanta.

  2. Duane - I still think the personal foul for taking off Spikes' helmet was a joke. It looked to me like Spikes ran into our guy and his helmet just fell off. But, when you have a reputation like Georgia does right now, that is going to get called.

I agree on the freshmen. You can't burn their redshirt this late in the season. Looks like the coaches agree with us :-)
