Newman!

Georgia defeated Arkansas last night 67-64 on a Steve Newman buzzer beater. If you know me, you know I always loved Steve Newman, and so does my dad. Just ask The Deaner. Anyway, I don't get ESPNU, so I didn't get to see the game. Probably better that way, because Scott Howard's call of the end of the game was magnificent. Here is what you need to know about the game. It was a close game throughout, but it looked like Arkansas was pulling away late, up 62-55 with a little over two minutes to play. What happened after that, was sheer Bulldog bliss (and I'm not talking about Dave). Steve Newman hit a three to make the score 62-58. Right after that, Sonny Weems scored for Arkansas and was fouled. It looked like the game was over, and Jeff Dantzler proclaimed the Dawgs were, "Three feet under." But Weems missed the free throw, keeping the score 64-58. Newman then hit another three to cut the lead to 64-61 (let me say again that I've always been Newman's biggest fan). This is where the Georgia defense took over. The Dawgs forced a shot clock violation. After that, Yata Gaines hit a three to tie the game. The problem at this point was there was about 30 seconds left to play, so the shot clock is off. Arkansas brings the ball down, playing for the last shot. Yata steals! Takais recovers and gives the ball to Newman who calls time (Newman rocks). So now Georgia has the last shot. Arkansas fouls with 2.7 seconds left because they have a foul to give. So with 2.7 seconds left, Mercer inbounds to, naturally, Steve Newman, who proceeds to drain the game winning three point shot from 26 feet. At this point Scott Howard goes absolutely berserk. It reminded me of when Jonas Hayes hit the game winning shot at Colorado a few years back. Totally unexpected, and Scott Howard goes crazy.
The team embraces Steve Newman, my favorite player, after he hit the game winner against Arkansas. Image from GeorgiaDogs.com.
Georgia has won three games in a row in the SEC. This game was really, really big for Georgia. I said before a split between Arkansas and Alabama would be huge. Well, we've got it already. And we can all thank the great Steve Newman.
